Abstract:

The restoration of posterior teeth with direct restorations in clinical practice has changed significantly over the past 10 to 20 years. Due to alleged adverse health effects and environmental concerns about the release of mercury and increased demand for aesthetic restorations, there began a cultural shift in dental consumers that placed a higher value on aesthetics and natural-appearing restorations. In addition the philosophy of minimal intervention density (MI) and the CAMBRA approach is gaining popularity worldwide. Dentists today have numerous restorative materials for direct posterior restoration. The clinical decision as to which restorative material to place is complex, involving factors relating to the tooth, the patient, the clinician, and the properties of the restorative materials. Individual restorative materials ideally are applied in a defined set of clinical circumstances, and it is not possible to freely substitute one material for another and expect long-term success. By utilizing proper techniques and understanding the material, one can both achieve a predictable outcome and desired aesthetics.
